Our mortuary
| « Back to Album | Photo 10 of 10 | Previous | Next |
In the basement of The Red Lion we have the original mortuary complete with heavy slate shelves. This dates from the early 18th century when the building was apparently a single storey thatched smallpox hospital. Our cellar also are reputed to have tunnels (now long ago sealed ) that link up to the churchyard of St Peters Church opposite the Pub. One tunnel is still visible that goes from the main beer cellar and under the High Street . Supposedly the building had links to local smuggling in the area and to the paupers graves in nearby Poorhouse Lane.
