203140090Our mortuary In the basement of The Red Lion we have the original mortuary complete with heavy slate shelves. This dates from the early 18th century when the building was apparently a single storey thatched smallpox hospital. Our cellar also are reputed to have tunnels (now long ago sealed ) that link up to the churchyard of St Peters Church opposite the Pub. One tunnel is still visible that goes from the main beer cellar and under the High Street . Supposedly the building had links to local smuggling in the area and to the paupers graves in nearby Poorhouse Lane.
